What is an Inter-district Transfer?
An inter-district transfer is a formal request that allows a student to attend a public school outside of the school district where the family physically lives.
In practical terms, it is needed in either of these situations:
-
A family lives outside the boundaries of the Newark Unified School District but wants to enroll their student in a Newark Unified School District school, or
-
A family lives within Newark Unified School District boundaries but wants their student to attend a school in another district.
Inter-district transfers must be approved by both the district of residence and the district of attendance, and approval is typically based on space availability and district policies. Approval is not automatic and may need to be renewed each school year.
