May 11, 2020 Parent Update

Dear Newark USD Community,

Hope you are all doing well and staying safe. As we head into a new week I wanted to reach out and share some updates for Newark USD.

At our May 7, 2020 the Board of Education approved a temporary grading policy that is aligned to the California Department of Education’s (CDE) guidance. For the elementary school level (Tk-6th grade), no grades will be given to students for trimester three and comments will be given to reflect the monitoring of student progress during distance learning. If a student is unable to participate in distance learning, a note will reflect this in the comment section.  This will provide insight for next year’s teacher. Students will continue to receive feedback from teachers on projects, assignments, and effort during distance learning through emails or responses on assignments. For our secondary schools (grades 7th-12th) students will transition to Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) grading with an emphasis on CDE’s recommendation to “hold students harmless” during this period. Credit will be given for 60% and above work and this change will align with the California State University and University of California systems that are accepting and recognizing CR/NC during this time of the pandemic. This change is in line with surrounding school districts within Alameda county.
